We came by the Municipality to register our baby under Belgium Nationality, since the father is Belgium, however because we are not married and the father recognition was made only after the child’s birth we were refused the Belgium Nationality.
As we imagined this cannot be possible if the father is Belgium, so we reached out to the Belgium Embassy and they mentioned that this is unacceptable treatment by the Gemente and once the father resides in Belgium the Gemente should have handled the case.
So it is possible, it just requires further paperwork.
In the beginning I asked the person who attended us if we could speak in English, we were refused. Since I (mother) am not Belgium, the father who is Belgium but speaks only French, so we had to use translators… but in the end the person was already speaking in English and told is that if we did not believe her to get a lawyer.
This seems very racist also on the Flemish side, unfortunately.

Services exist to help people and to provide them with information on how to solve situations instead of being denied and sent away.

Zeer vriendelijke mensen in het gemeentehuis. Hun bereidwilligheid, samen nadenken voor een oplossing, hun aangename en uiterst vriendelijke communicatie, was deze week alweer voor mij een deugddoende ervaring. Dank je wel!
